Hello Sorted Stoats!
The holiday season here, and with it, the excitement of giving and receiving gifts. But, if your home is already bursting at the seams, where will all those wonderful new presents go? 🤔
Fear not! With a little creativity and focus, you can free up space and create a stress-free environment. 🥳
Here are 4 fun and helpful tips to declutter your home for the holiday season:
Play the "One In, One Out" Game ⚖️
Make decluttering fun by turning it into a simple game. For every item you receive, challenge yourself to find one similar item to donate, sell, or toss.
New clothing? Donate some you no longer wear.
New toys for the kids? Encourage them to choose a couple of gently used ones to pass along to other children.
This approach keeps the process lighthearted while helping you maintain balance in your home. Plus, it feels great to know your donations are brightening someone else’s day! 🌟
Declutter in Small, Manageable Chunks 📋
Don't overwhelm yourself trying to declutter your entire home all in one day. Instead, set a timer for 20-30 minutes and focus on one small area at a time, such as:
A drawer in the kitchen
A shelf in the closet
A toy bin in the playroom
You'll be amazed at what you can accomplish in short, focused bursts. Breaking it down makes decluttering easier and less intimidating. Small steps really add up! 🪜
Have a Decluttering Contest! 🏆
Take a practical approach to decluttering by focusing on items you haven’t used in the last year. If something has been sitting untouched in a closet, drawer, or storage bin, it’s likely you don’t need it anymore. Ask yourself:
Have I used it in the past 12 months?
Does it still serve a purpose in my life?
Would I pay to store it?
If the answer is no, it’s time to donate, sell, or toss it. To make it fun, challenge yourself to clear out a set number of unused items and reward yourself once you hit your goal! 💯
Take a moment to reflect on each item’s usefulness and sentimental value. If you’re holding onto something out of guilt or obligation, remind yourself that it’s okay to part with it.
Make this tip even more fun by involving the family: grab a box, set a goal (like 12 items), and see who can fill their box the fastest with items they no longer need!
Reward Yourself For Wins!
Decluttering doesn’t have to be all work and no play. Celebrate your progress! For every space you declutter, reward yourself with something you enjoy, such as:
Watch your favorite holiday movie
Treat yourself to a warm cup of cocoa
Light a seasonal candle and relax in your newly decluttered space
Adding a little reward at the end of each task can make the process more enjoyable and motivate you to keep going. If you’re thinking of rewarding yourself with a shopping spree though, you might want to reconsider! 😜
